ENERGY STAR APPLIANCES

Upgrading your home appliances to energy-efficient models can be one of the fastest ways to reduce your annual energy bill, especially if your home appliances are over 10 years old. Look for the Energy Star label, as they use 10%-50% less energy than current Federal standards mandate.

The Federal Trade Commission requires a yellow EnergyGuide label be present on all new appliances. This label approximates the appliance’s annual operating cost and compares its energy use to similar models. Remember, choose a model which best fits your lifestyle and recycle old appliances for proper disposal.

When it is time to buy, consider a smaller refrigerator with a top freezer rather than a side-by-side door model which uses up to 25% more energy. Look for dishwashers with several wash cycle options. This will allow the machine to operate with the optimal amount of water and washing time. Finally, clothes washers with a high Modified Energy Factor (MEF) and a low Water Factor (WF) will expend less energy and water per load.

For more information about recycling your old appliances or other recycling programs in Cumberland County, call the Improvement Authority at 825-3700 or visit our website at www.ccia-net.com.
