SAY NO TO PLASTIC BAGS

By making small changes in shopping habits, Cumberland County residents can make trips to the grocery store more environmentally friendly, and help protect the health of the planet for future generations. One way to significantly reduce the amount of waste entering landfills and our delicate ecosystem is to stop using plastic shopping bags.

Each year, United States consumers throw away approximately 100 billion plastic shopping bags, which can take up to 1,000 years to decompose in a landfill. In addition, thousands of plastic bags are carried by the wind into forests, rivers and lakes each year which kill birds and mammals who get tangled it them or mistake them for food.

The environmentally friendly answer is to switch to reusable sturdy canvas or cloth bags that you bring from home. If you are not ready to purchase your own reusable bags, consolidate your purchases into as few bags as possible. When you get home, keep the plastic bags you brought home from the store and reuse them on your next shopping trip.

For more information about reusable shopping bags or other recycling programs in Cumberland County, call the Improvement Authority at 825-3700 or visit our Web site at www.ccia-net.com.
