FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

RECYCLE OLD TELEPHONE BOOKS

MILLVILLE, NJ: It is that time of year when new telephone books start arriving at homes and businesses throughout Cumberland County. The Cumberland County Improvement Authority wants to remind everyone that telephone book paper is 100 percent recyclable and is used primarily to make new telephone books. In fact, if all Americans recycled their telephone books for one year, we would save 650,000 tons of paper and free up two million cubic yards of landfill space.

Most telephone books distributed today are made from re-fabricated old telephone book pages mixed with some scrap wood to strengthen the fibers for re-use. In addition, old telephone books are also recycled into insulation materials, ceiling tiles, and roofing surfaces, as well as paper towels, grocery bags, cereal boxes, and office papers.

Cumberland County residents may mix old telephone books with newspaper, junk mail, and magazines in their red recycling container for curbside collection. Residents who utilize Convenience Centers may also bring the commingled paper to their local Convenience Center location. Businesses are encouraged to bring old telephone books home and recycle them with their mixed paper.

Your participation in the various recycling programs sponsored by the Cumberland County Improvement Authority has made us the number one recycling county in the state of New Jersey. Congratulations and keep up the good work!
